Quinta Madre de Água

Madre de Água is a family-owned winery nestled in the heart of the Dão region, Portugal, where the dramatic Serra da Estrela mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop. Founded by Lurdes and Luis, the project embodies a deep respect for nature, local traditions, and the art of winemaking.

The estate encompasses over 30 hectares across several farms, including the historic Quinta Madre de Água, named for the abundant water sources that nourish the land. Here, ancient granite buildings, centuries-old olive trees, and vineyards dating back 80 years coexist with modern amenities. This harmonious blend of tradition and innovation reflects the winery's philosophy.

At the core of Madre de Água lies a commitment to sustainable viticulture. The vineyards, situated at elevations up to 600 meters, benefit from the unique terroir of the Dão – a combination of granite soils, cool nights, and intense sunlight. This distinctive environment imparts character and complexity to the wines.

The estate cultivates a diverse range of both indigenous and international grape varieties, including Encruzado, Gouveio, Bical, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Syrah. Meticulous viticultural practices, including hand-harvesting and low yields, ensure optimal fruit quality.

Winemaking at Madre de Água is guided by a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the unique terroir and grape varieties to express themselves authentically. Renowned winemaker Paulo Nunes oversees the winemaking process, drawing upon his extensive experience in the Dão region to craft wines that are elegant, expressive, and true to their origins.

Madre de Água produces a portfolio of wines that reflect the diverse character of the estate and the surrounding landscape. From vibrant whites to powerful reds, each bottle tells a story of passion, tradition, and the enduring beauty of the Serra da Estrela
